Today in my social studies class we had to write an explanation on how a bill becomes a law.
Step 1: The bill will be introduced to the house
Step 2: Members of Parliament debate whether
the bill should go on to a select committee for further
consideration or whether it should be rejected.
Step 3: A select committee of MPs
carefully considers the bill. They read and listen to
the views of the public and interested organisations,
recommend amendments
Step 4: The bill returns to the House, along
with the recommendations of the select committee.
Members consider the recommendations
Step 5: Members debate the
bill part by part in a detailed examination that can take
several days. This is the last chance to change the bill.
Step 6: In this final debate, MP's look at the bill
as a whole and consider what will happen if the bill
becomes law.
Step 7:The Governor-General signs the bill
on behalf of the Sovereign, agreeing that it should
become an Act of Parliament and pass into law
Hope you have now learned how a bill becomes a law
